Former SF9 Singer Rowoon Reflects on His Role in Upcoming K-Drama The Matchmakers

Former SF9 singer Rowoon has already gained much attention due to his role in the upcoming historical drama, The Matchmakers. It follows the story of a young widower named Shim Jung-woo and a young widow, Jung Soon-deok, as matchmakers. The duo try to marry off unmarried men and women of the Joseon era who are considered older in the marriageable age range.

Rowoon recently expressed his interest in taking the lead role of Shim Jung-woo in the upcoming K-drama. In an interview with Soompi, he explained his reasons behind choosing The Matchmakers. He said, “I wanted to take on the challenge of the comedy genre. Actually, I think comedy is the most difficult genre.”

The Matchmakers promises comedy, romance, and drama as the two lead actors engage in a battle of matchmaking. Interestingly, their battle would ultimately bring the two together. The K-drama will premiere on October 30, 2023, on KBS and will be available on Viki.

Rowoon Dishes on His Character in The Matchmakers

Describing his character, Rowoon expressed that Shim Jung-woo might be perceived as rude because of the blatant honesty. He said, “Shim Jung Woo seems to be a child-like character whose time has stopped. I think he is a person who could be seen as rude due to his honesty.”

For the actor, the most challenging part about playing Shim Jung-woo is that his characteristics, ideas, or opinions don’t resonate with sentiments of today’s times. Rowoon expressed that this idea could play a part in the character being subjected to criticism. He said, “There are parts where Shim Jung Woo’s words coming from the historical or situational background may feel a little different from sentiments of the current times.”

However, Rowoon also ensured that he tried to express the aforementioned sentiments in a way that didn’t make Shim Jung-woo seem too hateful.

Directed by Hwang Seung-gi and written by Han Soo-jin, Rowoon and Cho Yi-hun play the lead couple in The Matchmakers. Other cast members of the K-drama include Jo Han-chul, Park Ji-young, Lee Hae-young, Jung Shin-hye, Park Ji-won, Choi Hee-jin, Jin Hee-kyung, Jung Mo-bin, Heo Nam-jun, Son Sang-yeon, Choi Kyung-hoon, and more.

Don’t forget to tune in to The Matchmakers on October 30, 2023, on KBS and Viki.
