Barbie Max Streaming Date Teased by Warner Bros. Discovery CEO

While Barbie continues to climb the box office rankings for the year, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav has teased when the Barbie Max streaming date will be.

When will Barbie arrive on Max?

According to Zaslav during the company’s recent Q2 earnings call, the Barbie Max streaming date is tentatively set for sometime this fall, when the feature will arrive on the streaming service. The reason for the slightly longer wait, according to Zaslav, is simply how well the move is doing during its theatrical run.

“We really believe in the motion picture window — let it play out. . .go into PVOD, take it through the windows that have worked forever [in the business],” Zaslav said (via Deadline). “When it goes on Max, it will have a good impact in the fall.”

In Deadline’s report, they note that Barbie is currently projected to cross the $400 million mark at the domestic box office on Thursday. Doing so in only 14 days would leapfrog it over both Top Gun: Maverick and The Super Mario Bros. Movie to the milestone, both of which took 18 days to hit $400 million in the U.S.

Globally, Barbie is set to cross the $1 billion milestone over the weekend or on Monday, with total projections placing the film at somewhere around $1.3 billion by the time its theatrical run has ended.

What is Barbie about?

Margot Robbie stars as Barbie, who leaves Barbieland in favor of the “real world” after a crisis of faith leads her to question her existence. Joining Barbie on the journey is Ryan Gosling’s Ken, Barbie’s boyfriend.

“After being expelled from Barbieland for being a less-than-perfect doll, Barbie sets off to the real world to find true happiness,” the official synopsis reads.

Barbie features a large ensemble cast, including America Ferrera, Issa Rae, Emma Mackey, Kate McKinnon, Simu Liu, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Ncuti Gatwa, Rhea Perlman, Dua Lipa, Emma Mackey, Ariana Greenblatt, Michael Cera, and Will Ferrell.

Barbie is directed by Greta Gerwig from a screenplay she co-wrote with Noah Baumbach. Robbie is a producer alongside Tom Ackerley, David Heyman, and Robbie Brenner.
