Self Reliance: Hulu Nabs U.S. Rights to Anna Kendrick & Andy Samberg Movie

Following world premiere of the Self Reliance movie at the 2023 SXSW Film Festival, Deadline brings world that Hulu has officially acquired the North American distribution rights to New Girl alum Jake Johnson’s feature directorial debut. The comedy thriller will be available for streaming on September 8.

What is Self Reliance about?

“The film follows a man who is offered a million dollars to play a game in which hunters try to kill him,” reads the synopsis. “He thinks he found the perfect loophole: they can only attack when he’s alone. His only problem is that none of his friends or family believe the game is real.”

Self Reliance is written and directed by Johnson, who is also playing the leading role of Tommy. Joining him is an all-star cast consisting of Anna Kendrick (Pitch Perfect), Andy Samberg (Brooklyn Nine-Nine), Natalie Morales (The Newsroom), GaTa (Dave), Emily Hampshire (Schitt’s Creek), Mary Holland (Happiest Season), Christopher Lloyd (Back to the Future movies), Boban Marjanović (John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum), and Wayne Brady (How I Met Your Mother). The upcoming movie also marks Johnson and Samberg’s second project together this year after recently voicing Peter B. Parker and Scarlet Spider in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.

The film is produced by Johnson, Ali Bell, and Joe Hardesty, with Samberg, Akiva Schaffer, and Jorma Taccone set as executive producers. It hails from Lonely Island and Walcott Productions.
