Hot Mess: We’re the Millers’ Emma Roberts to Star in Comedy Movie

American Horror Story alum Emma Roberts has signed on for the leading role in the upcoming comedy titled Hot Mess.

Roberts is no stranger to the comedy genre, as she previously starred in 2009’s Hotel for Dogs and 2013’s We’re the Millers, as well as romantic comedies like Valentine’s Day, Holidate, and Maybe I Do. She will next be seen in her Marvel debut in Sony’s Madame Web movie, and in the latest season of Ryan Murphy’s horror anthology AHS: Delicate.

“Hot Mess is a sharp, witty script that stood out to me as a fresh story of a woman finding her place in a world ruled by social media and outsized expectations,” director Katie Locke O’Brien said in a statement (via Deadline). “I am so eager to bring this to life with Emma as the perfect Laurel.”

What is Hot Mess About?

Hot Mess marks the feature-length directorial debut of Katie Locke O’Brien, with Gabrielle D’ Amico serving as its writer. Roberts is set to play a woman who — after embarrassing herself on TV — moves back home to her parent’s basement.

“It follows Laurel Mack (Roberts) who, after imploding in the worst way possible on a wildly popular American dating show, must do the ultimate walk of shame…back to her hometown,” reads the synopsis. “Having failed to win love on the show, she finds herself living in her quirky parents basement, without any friends, constantly bumping into the miserable ex the whole town adores, while experiencing the constant mockery of all who witnessed her public meltdown. She embarks on a hilarious and heartfelt journey to discover self-love and, with that, real connections with others.”

The film will be produced by Debbie Liebling, Maggie Malina and Laura Lewis, along with David Garrett’s Mister Smith Entertaintment. Production is expected to begin in early 2024.
