Wind River 2 Cast Adds Gil Birmingham & 3 More

The cast of the upcoming Wind River: The Next Chapter continues to grow, with Castle Rock Entertainment announcing on Wednesday that Gil Birmingham, Alan Ruck, Kali Reis, and Tatanka Means have all joined the cast of the sequel.

Birmingham starred in the original film as Martin Henson, the father of Natalie Hanson, whose body is discovered at the beginning of the film. Ruck is best known for his role as Cameron in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, but has also recently starred in HBO’s Succession, Hulu’s The Dropout, and ABC’s Spin City.

Reis made her onscreen debut just two years ago in 2021’s Catch The Fair One, and will also co-star alongside Jodie Foster in the upcoming fourth season of HBO’s True Detective. Means has recently appeared in FX’s Reservation Dogs and will also be in Marvel Studios’ upcoming Disney+ series Echo, as well as Martin Scorsese’s upcoming Killers of the Flower Moon.

The four actors join a cast that already includes previously confirmed cast member Martin Sensmeier as he reprises his role as Chip Hanson from the original crime drama.

Wind River: The Next Chapter is being written by Patrick Massett and John Zinman (Lara Croft: Tomb Raider). The film hails from Castle Rock Entertainment, Acacia Filmed Entertainment, and Thunder Road Pictures. Production is expected to begin in January.

“In the sequel, terror has escalated on the Wind River reservation as a series of ritualistic murders remain unsolved,” reads the synopsis. “The FBI therefore enlists the aid of Hanson, a newly minted tracker for the U.S. Fish & Game, who becomes embroiled in a desperate and dangerous fight between the authorities, a vigilante, and the Reservation he calls home.”

Wind River: The Next Chapter will be executive produced by Rob Reiner, Michele Reiner, Derrick Rossi, Jonathan Fuhrman, Courtney Shepard, and Hernan Narea, with Basil Iwanyk, Erica Lee, and Matthew George serving as producers.

The 2017 film was written and directed by Taylor Sheridan, who won the best director award at the Cannes Film Festival for his work on the film. It starred Marvel Cinematic Universe alums Jeremy Renner and Elizabeth Olsen and had grossed a modest $45 million against an $11 million budget.

Production on the Wind River sequel is currently underway in Calgary.
