Caste: Connie Nielsen, Jon Bernthal & More Cast in Ava DuVernay’s Next Movie

It’s being reported that Connie Nielsen (Wonder Woman), Jon Bernthal (The Punisher), Nick Offerman (The Last of Us), and Jasmine Cephas Jones (Hamilton) have been tapped to join Ava DuVernay‘s upcoming film adaptation of Caste, based on Pulitzer Prize winner Isabel Wilkerson’s nonfiction book of the same name.

According to Variety, Niecy Nash-Betts (Dahmer) and Vera Farmiga (The Conjuring franchise) have also signed on to the project to reunite with DuVernay after working together on the acclaimed miniseries When They See Us.

Caste is being written and directed by the Oscar nominated filmmaker, who’s best known for her work in the award-winning civil rights drama Selma. This marks DuVernay’s feature directorial comeback in four years since the theatrical release of A Wrinkle in Time. Oscar nominee Aunjanue Ellis (Lovecraft Country, King Richard) will be leading the drama, which is currently in production in Georgia.

It will use a “multiple-story structure to examine the unspoken system that has shaped America and chronicles how our lives today are defined by a hierarchy of human divisions dating back generations.”

The film is produced by DuVernay, Sarah Bremner, and Paul Garnes for ARRAY Filmworks. DuVernay has been developing the project since 2020, with Netflix initially attached to it.
