PS5 Firmware Update Adds Lists, UI Updates, and More

Sony has been holding a beta for its latest big PlayStation 5 firmware update and now said update is live for everyone. As noted last time around, this update adds a slew of features like lists, user interface improvements, and more.

The PlayStation Blog post announcing that the new system software has gone live isn’t as detailed as the one explaining the beta. Game lists are arguably the most substantial upgrade, as players can now sort through and organize their libraries and create folders for different titles as they see fit, as shown in the above picture. From the Game Library tab, users can create up to 15 lists with up to 100 titles each. The same game can also be added to multiple lists.

Players can now set their displays at 1440p if their display supports it, which has been a highly requested feature since launch. This is mainly for those with 1440p monitors, as the PS5 previously wasn’t too keen for those with those specific displays. Sony, for some reason, even released a trailer explaining 1440p and how it compares to 4K and 1080p.

The rest of the update is mostly a bunch of user interface changes. Users can now reveal all of a title’s hidden trophies, which is useful for those who have already beaten a game. Some PS5 games support the option to resume an activity from near where the “Play Game” button is, which seems to add another button press for those who don’t use the cards system. The quick menu is now at the far left instead of the far right, making it easier to quickly see screen shots when tapping the home button on the controller.

There are also a handful of social features. It’s now possible to request to see a player’s screen from within a party, get notifications if a game a party member launches is joinable, view the profile of a newly added friend straight from the same menu as the friend request, and send stickers and messages from the quick menu.

There are likely a couple more small changes scattered about, but those are all the bigger ones. Players will also be prompted to update their DualSense controllers next time they turn them on, too.
