It was announced in February that Steven Spielberg, who directed all of the previous Indiana Jones films, had exited the project as director but will remain on as a producer, which is when negotiations with Oscar winner James Mangold (Ford v Ferrari) to take over began.

Indiana Jones 5 has been in development since 2016 with Spielberg and Ford returning in their respective roles and an original theatrical release date set for July 19, 2019, but was constantly pushed back after multiple rewrites came from Jonathan Kasdan, son of Raiders of the Lost Ark writer Lawrence after original writer David Koepp exited the project.

Famed archaeologist and explorer Indiana Jones was introduced in 1981’s Raiders of the Lost Ark – one of AFI’s 100 Greatest American Films of All Time – and later thrilled audiences in 1984’s Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, 1989’s Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, and 2008’s Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. The four films have brought in nearly $2 billion at the global box office.
