Black Narcissus Trailer Sets November Premiere for New FX Miniseries

BBC and FX have released the official trailer for their upcoming three-part limited series adaptation of author Rumer Godden’s bestselling 1939 novel titled Black Narcissus, featuring a group of young nuns were tasked to set up a convent at the Himalayas. However, they’ll soon realize that the place will uncover their deepest secrets. Starring Gemma Arterton and the late award-winning veteran actress Diana Rigg in her one of her final performances, all three episodes is scheduled to air on FX on Monday, November 23 at 8PM ET/PT and will be available for streaming the following day on FX on Hulu. Set in Mopu, Himalayas 1934, a remote clifftop palace once known as the ‘House of Women’ holds many dark secrets. When the young nuns of St. Faith attempt to establish a mission there, its haunting mysteries awaken forbidden desires that seem destined to repeat a terrible tragedy.

During the latter years of British rule in India, ambitious young nun Sister Clodagh heads a mission to a remote part of the Himalayas. The palace of Mopu has been donated by General Toda Rai, who hopes the Sisters of St. Faith will rid the ‘House of Women’ of unhappy memories connected to his late sister, Srimati. Although Clodagh ignores the warnings of the General’s raffish agent Mr. Dean, isolation and illness soon take their toll, with the haunting atmosphere of the palace particularly affecting volatile Sister Ruth. As past and present collide, the arrival of the young General Dilip Rai is the catalyst for an explosion of repressed desires that may end in a fatal confrontation.

Black Narcissus is directed by Charlotte Bruus Christensen from a screenplay adapted by Amanda Coe. It is executive produced by Coe along with DNA TV’s Andrew Macdonald and Allon Reich. It is a co-production among FX Networks, FX Networks and BBC One with BBC’s Lucy Richer and Ayela Butt serving as executive producers.

The 1939 novel was first adapted into a film by directors Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger in 1947. It starred Academy Award-nominee Deborah Kerr along with British acting vets Kathleen Byron, Flora Robson, and Jean Simmons. The film earned two Oscar Awards for Best Cinematography and Best Art Direction.
