The Martian’s Drew Goddard Joins Ryan Gosling’s Project Hail Mary

The Martian Scribe Drew Goddard in talks for Ryan Gosling’s Project Hail Mary

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Academy Award nominated-writer Drew Goddard is currently in negotiations to join directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller’s forthcoming sci-fi film adaptation of Project Hail Mary which will be led Golden Globe winner Ryan Gosling.

It is unclear if Goddard will be penning the script for the film or not. However, if the deal pushes through, he would be developing the story with Lord and Miller and this project would also mark his second collaboration with author Andy Weir after adapting Weir’s debut novel The Martian.

Set to be published on 2021 by Random House, the outlet has described Hail Mary as a story centering around an astronaut who wakes up to find himself millions of miles away from home, in a tiny craft with two dead crewmates for company and no recollection of his mission or even his name. But this man will soon discover he is humanity’s only hope for survival from an extinction-level threat.

Starring Ryan Gosling (Drive, Blade Runner 2049, First Man), the film adaptation will be directed by Oscar-winning filmmaking duo Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse), who are also set as producers through Lord Miller Productions banner. It will also be produced by Gosling, Amy Pascal and Ken Kao.

Last March, MGM has successfully acquired the rights to Weir’s upcoming novel which was reportedly a seven-figure deal.

Goddard is no stranger to the sci-fi genre as he is best known for his works on films such as 2008’s Cloverfield, 2013’s World War Z and 2015’s The Martian with the latter earning him his first Oscar nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay. So far, he has also directed two films: the horror comedy The Cabin in the Woods and the neo-noir thriller film Bad Times at the El Royale.
