Marvel Delays Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness to 2022

Earlier this month, the ongoing global health crisis prompted Marvel to postpone all of their upcoming films, including Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. The Benedict Cumberbatch-led sequel vacated its original summer 2021 premiere date in favor of a November 5, 2021 debut. However, it sounds like the film is getting pushed back once again to make room for another hero’s next cinematic adventure. Variety reports that Disney and Marvel have delayed the movie to March 25, 2022.

Marvel and Sony will instead drop their third Spider-Man collaboration on November 5. This marks the first time that a live-action Spider-Man movie isn’t getting a summer release.

In the early days of the Hollywood shutdown, Marvel remained optimistic that the Doctor Strange sequel could begin production this June as originally planned. A previous report described the movie as “the biggest film in pre-production that has yet to move its start date.” However, this was before Marvel ended up shifting its entire Phase Four release calendar. Sam Raimi is reportedly sitting in the director’s chair for the sequel, with Loki showrunner Michael Waldron presiding over the latest draft of the script.

Additionally, Marvel has decided to release Taika Waititi’s Thor: Love and Thunder a week earlier than expected. That film will now hit theaters on February 11, 2022. Aside from Tom Holland’s third go-round as Spidey, 2021 will also herald the arrivals of Marvel’s Eternals and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. Those films will open on February 12, 2021 and May 7, 2021, respectively.
