Jane the Virgin spinoff

The CW Network is Working on a Jane the Virgin Spinoff

The world of Jane the Virgin is about to get a whole lot bigger. The CW, which airs the critically acclaimed teen drama, is currently developing a spinoff to the show, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Details are scarce, but the spinoff is planning to assemble an all-new cast, while still following a plotline introduced in the flagship series. It’s unknown if any of the show’s current stars will be appearing. It was also confirmed that the show won’t be getting a backdoor pilot, despite the fact that the final season of Jane the Virgin will air in 2019.

Valentina Garza, the writer for Jane the Virgin, will executive produce alongside series star Gina Rodriguez, I Can & I Will Productions’ VP of development Emily Gipson, showrunner Jennie Snyder Urman, producer Ben Silverman and former CW exec Joanna Klein. Brad Silberling, who directed several episodes of Jane the Virgin, including the series pilot, is also attached as an executive producer and will helm the show’s pilot should the effort move forward.

This news comes as networks and streaming outlets are looking for ways to turn existing shows into larger franchises. The CW is no stranger to this tactic, and it’s worked well for them in the past. After all, this is the network built the Arrowverse, a DC-superhero shared universe, and recently launched the third series in The Vampire Diaries franchise, Legacies.
