Hurst is set to play the role of Beta, the right-hand man to the leader of The Whisperers, Alpha played by Samantha Morton. In the comic books, The Whisperers will be the next group that Rick Grimes will have to face after the All Out War storyline. In addition to Hurst, Cassady McClincy (Love Simon, Castle Rock), Nadia Hilker, Lauren Ridloff and Eleanor Matsuura (Wonder Woman) are also joining season 9 as Lydia, Magna, Connie and Yumiko respectively.

Based on the comic book series written by Robert Kirkman and published by Image Comics, The Walking Dead tells the story of the months and years that follow after a zombie apocalypse and follows a group of survivors, led by police officer Rick Grimes, who travel in search of a safe and secure home. The ninth season will jump forward in time following the events of the group’s All Out War with Negan and his Saviors and will highlight a changing infrastructure in the physical world as Rick works to build the more peaceful utopia that his late son, Carl, envisioned.

The series stars Andrew Lincoln, Norman Reedus, Lauren Cohan, Danai Gurira, Melissa McBride, Lennie James, Alanna Masterson, Josh McDermitt, Christian Serratos, Seth Gilliam, Ross Marquand, Austin Amelio, Tom Payne, Xander Berkeley, Khary Payton, and Jeffrey Dean Morgan. Newcomers to the series include Lauren Ridloff as comic book character Connie, with Eleanor Matsuura as Yumiko from the comic series, and Fantastic Beasts star Dan Fogler in an undisclosed role.

The Walking Dead will premiere on October 7 on AMC.
