Deadwood Movie to Begin Production Next Year?

According to TVLine, the much-anticipated Deadwood movie is set to begin production in the fall of 2018, although the site is quick to say that HBO has not made an official comment yet and the revival has yet to receive a green light. Creator David Milch has written the script for the film, which will serve as a coda to tie up loose ends left by the series, which was cancelled after three seasons.

The HBO drama ran from 2004-2006 and was a hit with fans, many of whom have since been asking for more. A Deadwood movie was suggested, although it’s been more than a decade since the series ended.

“There are signs that HBO are quite keen to make it,” series star Ian McShane told Variety back in June. They’ve got the script. It’s when they’ll make an offer and when we can fit it in. We probably won’t start ‘American Gods’ until probably the end of the year or early next year, so there’s a window when we can do ‘Deadwood,’ but they need to get everybody together. I mean all the characters that David [Milch] wants to put in the show. I’m probably going to have breakfast with him later this week. But no, they’re keen to do it, and I’m sure it would seem not only artistically a perfect time to do it but also commercially because there’s always been a revised interested in ‘Deadwood’. It went off the air far too soon for all the reasons you say, but that’s a long time ago. It seems like a two hour film would be a nice thing for all the people that want to see it and all of us who were deprived of the gig too early.”

Once the cable network cancelled the show after a mere three 12-episode seasons, Milch’s original plan was to make two Deadwood movies and create a proper ending for the rivalry between Sheriff Seth Bullock (Timothy Olyphant) and foul-mouthed pimp Al Swearengen (McShane). The cast for Deadwood also includes Molly Parker, Jim Beaver, W. Earl Brown, Dayton Callie, Kim Dickens, Dora DuFran, Brad Dourif, Anna Gunn, John Hawkes and Jeffrey Jones.
