Black Panther is King with $387 Million at the Global Box Office!

Marvel Studios‘ Black Panther is king at the global box office with an estimated $387 million through Monday’s Presidents’ Day holiday! The film opened to an estimated $192 million domestically for the three-day portion of the weekend from 4,020 theaters, an average of $47,767 per location, and is expected to gross $218.2 million through Monday. The $192 million figure is the highest debut ever for a February film (beating Deadpool‘s  $132.4 million from 2016) and the fifth-highest opening weekend of all time. Black Panther received an A+ CinemaScore from audiences.

Internationally, Black Panther has brought in $169 million since beginning its overseas rollout on Wednesday, February 13, bringing its worldwide total to $361 million through Sunday. Including Monday’s domestic estimate, that total climbs to $387 million. The international highlights include: Korea ($25.3M); UK ($24.8M); Mexico ($9.6M); Brazil ($9.4M); Australia ($9.2M); France ($7.7M); Indonesia ($6.5M); Germany ($6.2M); Taiwan ($5.6M); Malaysia ($4.9M); Philippines ($4.8M); Thailand ($4.4M); India ($3.8M); Hong Kong ($3.6M); and Italy ($3.4M). Next weekend, the movie opens in Russia, Vietnam, Trinidad, Peru and Venezuela. It will open in Japan on March 1st and in China on March 9th.

The Ryan Coogler-directed film stars Chadwick Boseman, Danai Gurira, Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyong’o, Martin Freeman, Daniel Kaluuya, Letitia Wright, Winston Duke, Angela Bassett, Forest Whitaker, and Andy Serkis.

Remaining in second place domestically its second weekend was Sony Pictures Animation‘s Peter Rabbit, which added $17.3 million from Friday to Saturday for a total of $48.2 million. For the four-day weekend, the adaptation is expected to take in $22.1 million to bring its total to $53.1 million. Made for $50 million, the Will Gluck-directed film stars James Corden, Rose Byrne, Domhnall Gleeson, Sam Neill, Daisy Ridley, Elizabeth Debicki, and Margot Robbie.

For its second weekend, Universal Pictures’ Fifty Shades Freed dropped two spots to third and 56% in ticket sales with $16.9 million Friday to Saturday and a total of $76.1 million. For the four days, Fifty Shades Freed will earn $18.9 million and bring its domestic total up to $78.1 million. Internationally, the third and final chapter in the franchise has earned $190.8 million to push its worldwide total to $268.9 million. Made for $55 million, Fifty Shades Freed was directed by James Foley and stars Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson.

Sony Pictures’ Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle has now grossed $904.6 million worldwide after nine weeks, with another $7.9 million earned domestically from Friday to Saturday and $4.8 million internationally. Remaining in fourth place in North America, the film has brought in $377.6 million through Sunday. The studio is projecting $10 million for the four days, which would push its domestic total to $379.7 million. Internationally, Jumanji has reached $527 million. Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle has now passed Spider-Man 2 to become Sony Pictures’ second-highest grossing film of all time domestically, behind 2002’s Spider-Man ($403.7 million), and is also Sony’s second-biggest film ever worldwide, behind only Skyfall ($1.108 billion). Directed by Jake Kasdan, the $90 million-budgeted film stars Dwayne Johnson, Jack Black, Kevin Hart, Karen Gillan, Nick Jonas, and Bobby Cannavale.

Clint Eastwood’s The 15:17 to Paris (Warner Bros. Pictures) rounded out the top five with $7.7 million over the three days and has collected $25.4 million after two weeks. Internationally, The 15:17 to Paris has grossed $10.7 million. Featuring the real-life heroes playing themselves — Anthony Sadler, Alek Skarlatos, and Spencer Stone — the film cost $30 million to make.

20th Century Fox’s The Greatest Showman added $5.1 million over the three-day portion to take its nine-week total to $154.5 million. It’s expected to earn $6.3 million for the four days for a total of $155.7 million. Directed by Michael Gracey, The Greatest Showman cost $84 million to make and stars Hugh Jackman, Zac Efron, Michelle Williams, Rebecca Ferguson, and Zendaya.

Also, Aardman Animation’s latest Early Man (Lionsgate) debuted in seventh place with $3.2 million over the three days from 2,494 theaters. It is expected to gross $4.2 million for the four-day weekend. Directed by Nick Park, the film features the voices of Eddie Redmayne, Tom Hiddleston, Maisie Williams, and Timothy Spall.
