The Secret Life of Pets 2 Officially Set for 2018!

With the announcement today that Illumination Entertainment and Universal Pictures’ film The Secret Life of Pets has crossed $400 million at the worldwide box office, the pair have announced that The Secret Life of Pets 2 will be released on July 13, 2018; one of the previously-announced dates for an Illumination film. 

The Secret Life of Pets 2 will follow this summer’s blockbuster about the lives our pets lead after we leave for work or school each day. Illumination founder and CEO Chris Meledandri and his longtime collaborator Janet Healy will produce the sequel. The Secret Life of Pets 2 will see the return of writer Brian Lynch (Minions) and once again be directed by Chris Renaud (Despicable Me series, Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax).

The first Secret Life of Pets has now grossed $300.3 million at the domestic box office, where it held the No. 1 spot for two consecutive weeks and had the best opening for an original film, animated or otherwise. The film has also made $103.5 million internationally, where it opened No. 1 in 18 markets to date. Over the next few months, the comedy will open in 48 more territories, with China opening today. 

Comedy superstars Louis C.K. (Louie, Trumbo), Eric Stonestreet (Modern Family, Identity Thief) and Kevin Hart (Get Hard, Ride Along) make their animated feature film debuts in The Secret Life of Pets movie, which co-stars Ellie Kemper (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, The Office), Lake Bell (In a World…, Million Dollar Arm), Jenny Slate (Obvious Child, Zootopia), Bobby Moynihan (Sisters, Adult Beginners), Hannibal Buress (Broad City, Baywatch) and Albert Brooks (Concussion, Finding Dory).

Illumination founder and CEO Chris Meledandri and his longtime collaborator Janet Healy produce The Secret Life of Pets movie, which is directed by Chris Renaud (Despicable Me, Despicable Me 2), co-directed by Yarrow Cheney and written by Brian Lynch and Cinco Paul & Ken Daurio.
