A Planet of the Apes Director & Robopocalypse Writer

Mike Fleming reported some interesting nuggets today.

First up, he says that Rupert Wyatt (The Escapist) is the frontrunner to direct 20th Century Fox’s Caesar: Planet of the Apes, a prequel written by Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver. CHUD has posted a lot more details about the project. Here’s a clip:

Will is a doctor trying to cure Alzheimers, a disease that afflicts his father. He’s working with monkeys to create a benign virus that can get into brain tissue and restore functionality. After his research is shut down he’s left with just one chimp, the child of his most promising subject, and Will raises him at home. Young Caesar is incredibly intelligent for an ape, and over time he continues to mutate and evolve, looking less like a chimp and moving on from sign language to actual speech. Eventually Caesar ends up leading an army of apes in an uprising just as a catastrophe strikes mankind.

Fleming also says that Drew Goddard (Cloverfield, upcoming The Cabin in the Woods has been hired to write the script for the adaptation of Daniel H. Wilson’s Robopocalypse, which explores the fate of the human race following a robot uprising. The project is a serious candidate for Steven Spielberg’s next directing job.
