Drew Struzan’s ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ Poster is a Bit… Plain

Below is the Drew Struzan poster for Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens courtesy of Slashfilm and as much as I have loved pretty much every poster Struzan has created for the Star Wars features, up to and including the posters for the prequels, this poster just seems incredibly plain. I have the highest of hopes and expectations for the final movie, but this poster isn’t going to put butts into the seats.

Granted, the colors aren’t that of the final product as I have manipulated the picture to the best of my ability in Photoshop and attempted to improve on the color contrast a bit. Additionally, perhaps I’m judging it thru the wrong lens. Am I comparing this too much to not only Struzan’s past posters and the films themselves? Perhaps Force Awakens is a large shift from the epic nature of the original trilogy and its prequels and tells more of an intimate story. though it’s hard to argue the original Star Wars films weren’t focused on Luke, no matter how epic they felt.

Of course, this also may not be the final version and given the lack of credits and overly simplistic nature of it all, that’s the assumption I’m working under.
