Lowery Eyes ‘Yellow Birds’, ‘Omen’ Sequel Planned, von Trier Actioner and Gilliam’s ‘Quixote’ Back On

Glen Mazzara (“The Walking Dead”) is set to write Damien, a sequel to the original 1976 horror classic The Omen and not a sequel to the 2006 shit show of a remake. The story will center on Damien Thorn, now an adult and haunted by his past, Damien is faced with a series of macabre events and must finally face his true destiny: he is the Antichrist. Oh, the catch, this is being written for Lifetime. Yeah. Lifetime. [THR]

Open Road Films has acquired Dan Gilroy‘s Nightcrawlers centering on the story of a driven young man (Jake Gyllenhaal) who finds a home in the nocturnal world of freelance crime journalism in Los Angeles. Rene Russo, Bill Paxton and Riz Ahmed also star in the film.

Terry Gilliam is reportedly trying to resurrect The Man Who Killed Don Quixote as he and Spanish producer Adrian Guerra are attempting to cast the film now in hopes of being in production by early 2015. Previous versions were to include Jean Rochefort and Johnny Depp, but John Hurt recently said he has the role of Quixote locked if he wants it. Apparently the story has changed a bit over time and will now center on “a commericals director who is confused with Sancho Panza by a deluded actor who played Don Quixote in a movie the exec once shot.” [Variety]

[amz asin=”0316219347″ size=”small”]Benedict Cumberbatch, Tye Sheridan and Will Poulter are set to star in an adaptation of Kevin Powers‘ excellent book “The Yellow Birds” for Ain’t Them Bodies Saints director David Lowery. The book follows the story of two young soldiers trying to stay alive in Iraq and I can tell you right now, it’s a great book and one I wholeheartedly recommend you read. [Screen Daily]

Adrien Brody is set to star in Emperor for director Lee Tamahori (Die Another Day). Written by Jeffrey Hatcher the 16th century set feature will follow how Holy Roman Emperor Charles V’s personal demons took his empire to the brink. [Screen Daily]

Finally, Lars von Trier is reportedly ready to move into Michael Bay territory as producer Peter Aalbaek Jensen says von Trier is talking about making his own version of an action movie. Okay, so I guess that probably won’t be anything like a Michael Bay film. Next for von Trier, however, is expected to be a horror film titled Detroit. Perhaps “horror” in this case is best left in quotes. [Screen Daily]
