HBO has premiered a 12-minute making of featurette for their upcoming release of Steven Soderbergh‘s Behind the Candelabra, which is set to premiere at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival in advance of its May 26 HBO debut at 9PM. An extended version of the following featurette will premiere on HBO on May 22.

Before Elvis, before Elton John, Madonna and Lady Gaga, there was Liberace (Michael Douglas): virtuoso pianist, outrageous entertainer and flamboyant star of stage and television. A name synonymous with showmanship, extravagance and candelabras, he was a world-renowned performer with a flair that endeared him to his audiences and created a loyal fan base spanning his 40-year career. Liberace lived lavishly and embraced a lifestyle of excess both on and off stage.

In summer 1977, handsome young stranger Scott Thorson (Matt Damon) walked into his dressing room and, despite their age difference and seemingly different worlds, the two embarked on a secretive five-year love affair. Behind the Candelabra takes a behind-the-scenes look at their tempestuous relationship–from their first meeting backstage at the Las Vegas Hilton to their bitter and public break-up.

Along with Damon and Douglas the film co-stars Rob Lowe as Dr. Jack Startz, Paul Reiser as Mr. Felder, Dan Aykroyd as Seymour Heller, Scott Bakula as Bob Black and Debbie Reynolds as Frances.

Check out the featurette below and I’ll have a review for you from Cannes in a couple weeks.
