Those ‘Star Wars’ Standalone Films are Confirmed

Disney CEO Bob Iger spoke with CNBC today regarding the Star Wars: Episode VII in 2015.

Last night word started making the rounds of a potential film centered on Yoda, and while Iger wasn’t specific about which characters these new films would focus on, his comments more than confirm standalone films are in the plans.

“There’s been speculation about some standalone films in development, and I can confirm to you today that in fact we are working on a few standalone films. [Lawrence] Kasdan and Simon Kinberg are both working on films, derived from great Star Wars characters that are not part of the overall saga. So we still plan to make Star Wars 7, 8 and 9 roughly over a six year period of time, starting 2015. But there are going to be a few other films released in that period of time, too.”

The fact Kasdan is involved is one item that gave some credence to the Yoda rumors seeing how he co-wrote the screenplay for Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back, which introduced Yoda to the Star Wars universe. I think Iger’s statement also suggests he can’t say for certain, which characters will get their own films and I am still willing to bet the Yoda idea was leaked online just to gauge reaction.
