‘Magic Mike’, ‘Sunday Bloody Sunday’ and ‘Blade Runner’ on DVD and Blu-ray This Week

This Week On DVD and Blu-ray: October 23, 2012

This week offers a wide range of titles including Criterion’s presentation of John Schlesinger’s Sunday Bloody Sunday, a new anniversary edition of Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner and then Steven Soderbergh’s latest film Magic Mike. On top of that I have several new releases added to the calendar including The Bourne Legacy, Butter, The Paperboy and Criterion’s upcoming release of Roman Polanski’s Rosemary’s Baby.

But before we get to the upcoming releases, let’s check out this week’s new releases.

I wonder, can Magic Mike make my top ten for the year? I haven’t taken a look at it a second time yet, but I hope to before the year is up. I was looking through my reviews for the year so far and I have given out 11 B+ grades (which seems like a lot) already and Magic Mike was one of them and one of the titles that still remains at the forefront of my mind. Not enough to request a Blu-ray review copy, however, which may say something about its chances.

Sunday Bloody Sunday
Sunday Bloody Sunday
I had the chance to finish watching Criterion’s presentation of John Schlesinger’s Sunday Bloody Sunday, but I haven’t yet had a chance to watch the features so my full review will have to wait. When it comes to Schlesinger’s work, I’m a novice having only seen Midnight Cowboy once and this being my first time with Sunday Bloody Sunday, but I will say it’s a fantastic piece of cinema.

It’s a challenging relationship drama and one that will certainly having me saying something along the lines of “Is simply knowing you are loved enough?” as it features on a bisexual (Murray Head) carrying on a relationship with a woman (Glenda Jackson) and an older man (Peter Finch) and the issues that come about as a result of the relationship. Playing a part are not only their feelings, but their childhoods, their memories and certainly the 1970s setting. The image looks great and I can’t wait to dive into the features.

Blade Runner: 30th Anniversary Edition
Blade Runner: 30th Anniversary Edition on DVD Blu-ray today
The way Warner Bros. has milked this film on DVD, Blu-ray, HD DVD and whatever other kind of media possible you’d think everyone in the world would have at least three copies. Yet, I wonder how far the knowledge of Blade Runner spans. It still feels like a film best known by cinephiles and only loved and oft referenced by the sci-fi geeks among them. This 30th Anniversary collection has a lot to like, but is it anything you actually need? Click the “Buy Now” link for more information on this release.

Seeking a Friend for the End of the World

Not a very good movie. Sorry, but those are the facts as I see them.

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter
Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter on DVD Blu-ray today
I actually had a decent time with this film in theaters, but have no desire to see it again. However, everyone should see Abraham Lincoln battle a flying cow before seeing Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln or you won’t fully understand all The Great Emancipator was up against.

Take This Waltz

I never did end up seeing this, though I’ve heard some good things. Not surprising given the fact it’s directed by Sarah Polley and stars Michelle Williams.

Fear & Desire
Fear & Desire (Blu-ray)
I first saw Stanley Kubrick’s Fear & Desire on TCM HD and I’ve had it saved on my DVR ever since. I didn’t ask Kino to send me a copy because, quite frankly, it’s just not that good. If you’re interested, trying giving this one a rent, but I wouldn’t bother shelling out any money.

Secret Of The Wings
Secret Of The Wings
It’s going to be considered for Best Animated Feature, you better be sure and see it. No, I’m not serious, but I’m sure if you have a young daughter you may know someone interested.

Wrong Turn 5: Bloodlines
Wrong Turn 5: Bloodlines
I featured a pretty gnarly exclusive clip from Wrong Turn 5 a little while back (included just below) and if you’re a fan of this franchise it looks to deliver more of what you’re looking for, though I’m not sure they’ll ever be able to do better with this series of films than the second one.

Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Witness Protection
Tyler Perry's Madea's Witness Protection
If only Alex Cross had done better they may have been able to get people who saw it to casually walk through a store and look over and say, “Hey, isn’t that genius-level detective that caught that psychopath? What’s he doing in a dress? Oh man, this must be the sequel! Gonna buy it!” Unfortunately, I don’t think Madea gained any new audience members in the last four days.
