Mel Gibson to Direct Leonardo DiCaprio in Untitled Viking Feature

Variety‘s Mike Fleming has just posted a casting article worth repeating saying Mel Gibson will direct Leonardo DiCaprio in an untitled period drama set in the world of Viking culture. The Departed‘s William Monahan is writing the script with shooting expected to begin fall 2010.

Graham King will produce with Gibson and Tim Headington in a co-production between King’s GK Films and Gibson’s Icon Productions. “This will be an awe-inspiring story, created with some of the industry’s finest cinematic talent and I am just over the moon to be making this film with Mel, Leo and Bill,” King told Variety.

DiCaprio has been linked to several roles since signing on and recently completing Christopher Nolan’s Inception, which hits theaters July 16, 2010. In fact, IMDb has him attached to 30 upcoming films as either an actor, a producer or both including Brave New World with Ridley Scott, The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt with Martin Scorsese and the adaptation of Robert Ludlum’s The Chancellor Manuscript. Your guess is as good as mine as to which one he’ll turn to next.

DiCaprio will next be seen in Scorsese’s Shutter Island, which hits theaters on February 19, 2010.

As for Mel Gibson, he’ll be back in theaters on January 29 with Edge of Darkness directed by Martin Campbell and he is starring in The Beaver, which is being directed by Jodie Foster.
