I Am Legend Strong in IMAX

IMAX Corporation and Warner Bros. Pictures today announced that I Am Legend opened strongly, with most shows sold out at IMAX® theatres during its debut weekend, contributing $3.2 million of the record-breaking $77.4 million that the film grossed at the domestic box office, from December 14 through Sunday, December 16. The picture opened on 77 domestic IMAX screens, posting a per screen average of $41,936. I Am Legend also opened on 6 international IMAX screens, bringing the worldwide IMAX estimated total to $3.4 million.

“With ‘I Am Legend,’ this weekend marks the biggest December opening in not only motion picture history but IMAX history as well. We couldn’t be more thrilled,” said Dan Fellman, President of Domestic Distribution at Warner Bros. Pictures. “We’re delighted to be able to offer fans of Will Smith and this classic sci-fi thriller two exciting ways to experience the film throughout the holiday season.”

“‘I Am Legend’ marks our biggest December opening, and Warner Bros. Pictures has again delivered a powerful blockbuster that resonates with IMAX audiences,” said IMAX Co-Chairmen and Co-CEOs Richard L. Gelfond and Bradley J. Wechsler. “This has been a banner film year for IMAX, one in which we’ve contributed to the box office results of a large number of movies that have opened in the prized number one spot, and we’re pleased that the recently confirmed expansion of the IMAX theatre network will help us meet the high demand from moviegoers.”

“We’re so excited by our strong film performance in 2007. Combining a highly successful, time-tested science-fiction story with the talents of Will Smith, Warner Bros. Pictures and the power of The IMAX Experience® is why these results are so fantastic. We are delighted to be a part of such a successful movie that we believe will carry on in full force through the holidays,” added Greg Foster, Chairman and President of IMAX Filmed Entertainment. “These weekend results illustrate the strength of IMAX’s partnership with Warner Bros. Pictures, and the potential draw of films that are ideally suited to IMAX.”
