Butler Won’t Escape From New York

Gerard Butler has exited Escape From New York, the remake of the John Carpenter film at New Line. Right after his turn as the Spartan in 300, Butler made a deal to play Snake Plissken. He’s now left for creative differences.

New Line has brought Jonathan Mostow (Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines) in to rewrite, with an option to direct.

The original 1981 film starred Kurt Russell and was written and directed by John Carpenter. In the film, Snake Plissken is a convict and war hero who’s sent into a futuristic Manhattan which has been turned into a giant maximum security prison to rescue the president of the U.S. after his plane is knocked down by terrorists.
