The Star Wars News Roundup – 11.29.13

The purpose of this roundup is to put the highlights of all things Star Wars from the last week in one location. If you read this each week, you should be able to converse fluently with any Star Wars fan on everything from the latest Star Wars: Episode VII developments to the latest toys. And maybe you’ll even share with them something that they might have missed.

Let’s get to it!

Episode VII Movie News Summary

The Hollywood Reporter got information on yet another character they are casting for:

With the movie now being rewritten by Abrams and Lawrence Kasdan, sources say producers also are looking to fill a new role: a 40-something military man a la Matt Damon in Elysium.

MTV spoke with J.J. Abrams about “Episode VII.” He discusses the moved release date, writing with Lawrence Kasdan, R2-D2, and more:

Total Film also features an interview with Abrams:

Abrams tells us about hiring Empire Strikes Back screenwriter Lawrence Kasdan to help him rework Michael Arndt’s Episode VII script.

“Working with Larry has been one of the most surreal joys of my life,” Abrams says. “We’ve had a lot of fun working together. He’s an incredible guy and an inspiring and spectacular writer.”

Abrams adds that he’s looking forward to shooting the film in London.

“It’s something that I’ve always intended to do,” he says. “But I’m torn because I have done everything I can to keep the production of my projects in Los Angeles. Yet the opportunity to work with UK crews is something that has always been a dream of mine.

On another note, Jedi News UK reports that “Episode II” and “III” will be getting a 3D release like “Episode I” did:

I’ve got another tidbit of news. Pathé is a large chain of cinemas in The Netherlands and whilst browsing their website I stumbled across something interesting. It was something I haven’t come across anywhere else, so the first thing I did, was call to confirm it. And they did. On the website they have Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith listed for December 31st, 2014, both movies in 3D!

This makes sense leading up to the release of “Episode VII.” Stay tuned!

Star Wars Underworld reports that at a convention in Poland, some “Clone Wars” updates were presented. A trailer was shown advertising “The Lost Missions” airing on Disney XD in early 2014. They’ll consist of what appears to be more than 10 episodes:

Note: The following has been automatically translated from Polish so it is hard to read and understand at times:

“Trailer began by showing a dark, damp fog covered the planet – it was accompanied by the voice of Qui-Gon, saying: “You must go to the Dagobah (?)., Where you will find your answers.” I landed there Yoda.

Many loose scenes related to a ripe old master: in one of them walked among red, dust-covered rocks (Korriban?), The second was in a dark building and ran up to him being a bit reminiscent of the Balrog from “Lord of the Rings” – consisted of smoke and fire , in another fight on the platform of a hooded figure, equipped with a red lightsaber, another presented him how to jump the airborne platforms, leading to what looked like a huge tree, located on the background of the cloudy, yellow sky, and finally, you will see Yoda was like talking with a group of representatives of a new breed – were round, white and maroon faces and golden eyes.

Oppo Rancisis was present at the meeting of the Jedi Council.

Members of the steel circle over Yoda and bent over him.

One scene showed a lot of ghosts (or perhaps invisible) Jedi, taking part in the battle.

Miceage reports that the Star Wars themed Tomorrowland may be on hold due to budget busts:

Under this darkening cloud of financial news, Bob Iger and all of Disney’s top executives had a very tense series of meetings and presentations in Orlando two weeks ago. The NextGen program was discussed at length at this executive gathering, on the record and off, and it was impossible to sugarcoat the fact that the NextGen program is wildly over budget, way behind schedule, and not pulling in the extra profits it was supposed to. A furious Bob Iger returned to Burbank and has now told WDI to halt all work on all major projects planned for the American parks, Disneyland Paris and Hong Kong Disneyland. And in a follow up meeting with Tom Staggs last week, WDI and TDA had the financial rug yanked out from underneath all of the smaller projects being worked on specifically for Anaheim and Disneyland’s 60th Anniversary. The result is that dozens of Imagineers who were working on Star Wars and other plans for Anaheim have now been told to stop their work and are reassigned to work on Shanghai Disneyland (and its conveniently separate budget) for at least the next 90 days….

Star Wars in Tomorrowland – On Hold

Originally the plan to add Star Wars to Tomorrowland was going to be divided into two phases; a first phase involving some placemaking and a replacement for Captain EO to be finished prior to the 60th Anniversary, and a second phase kicking off in late 2015. The second phase included the Speeder Bike E Ticket ride, Ewok village and forest where Autopia currently is, a Millenium Falcon walk-thru where the PeopleMover platform is, tearing out the decaying PeopleMover tracks and moving the Astro Orbiter up on top of the Space Mountain concourse, and turning Tomorrowland Terrace into an interactive Tatooine Cantina restaurant show. All of that is now on hold indefinitely. Although Anaheim gets off a bit easier with its Star Wars plan on hold, as the plans for many of these Star Wars elements coming to Disney Hollywood Studios in WDW have just been cancelled outright.
