Some media outlets have taken this as “confirmation” that R2-D2 was going to be in “Episode VII.” Really????
Also this week, Lucasfilm confirmed the open casting call in the U.S. for “Episode VII” on Facebook. The details are at Opencasting2013.com. They are even accepting online auditions as well for those that can’t appear in person.
The Telegraph went to the British open casting call and took some video:
Star Wars fans and aspiring thespians hoping to win a role in Star Wars: Episode VII began gathering in Bristol in the early hours of Saturday morning. By 8am at least 200 had turned out, and that number kept on increasing through the day, despite wet and windy weather.
“All I have to do, as I have experience with The Force, is just to go up to the panel and say ‘I am the actor you’re looking for,'” said one confident young fan, clutching a blue plastic light sabre.
Another reported that his audition was “really quick”, lasting just 25 seconds; which possibly does not bode well for his chances of winning a role.
Producers are casting two roles via the open audition, one male named Thomas aged between 19 – 23 years old and one female, named Rachel aged around 16-17 years-old.
TheForce.Net did a nice roundup of all the coverage of the British open casting calls. Also, more venues may be added according to publicists in the UK:

Meanwhile, Star Wars veterans have been commenting on the current casting. Kenny Baker spoke with Sky News while Warwick Davis took the direct approach.

E! Online spoke to David Oyelowo, who continues to play coy about “Episode VII” casting rumors:
“Everyone is asking me about Star Wars,” Oyelowo said Saturday at the BAFTA LA Jaguar Britannia Awards. “The breaking news is J.J. Abrams is going to give you that breaking news.”
He added, “I’d go anywhere to work with J.J. Abrams. I think what he did with Star Trek was so extraordinary And I think what he’ll do with Star Wars will be just as impressive.”
While it’s not clear which role Oyelowo could be on the list for, he did say that Lando Calrissian (played by Billy Dee Williams in the original Star Wars films) is his favorite character. “He was pretty cool,” the actor said.
Oyelowo said with a big smile, “Because he looks like me.”

George Lucas Interview: Original Concepts for Star Wars – In this vintage featurette, Star Wars creator George Lucas discusses the origins and evolution of the Star Wars story. The original concept centered around a father and his twin children, and that relationship was the heart of the story. Lucas developed the story further, saying that characters “changed shapes and sizes,” and it finally solidified into what Star Wars would become. However, he also reveals that he would often let the story and characters lead him, and “that’s the adventure of writing — the fact that you’re not sure where it’s going to go.”
Return of the Jedi: Original Teaser Trailer (1982) – This trailer for Return of the Jedi is identical to one released earlier in 1982, with one exception: it features the movie’s new title and logo. Famously, the film was originally called Revenge of the Jedi until George Lucas opted to change the name, noting that revenge is not the Jedi way.
The trailer features glimpses at many of Return of the Jedi’s action setpieces, including the Battle of Endor, the speeder bike chase, and the attack on the Death Star. It also keeps some things secret; neither Jabba the Hutt nor the Emperor are included.
Interestingly, the trailer shows Luke Skywalker wielding a blue lightsaber — in the final film, his Jedi weapon would have a green blade, resulting in a more visual pop against the blue sky background seen during the attack on Jabba’s sail barge. Also included is a quick shot of Obi-Wan Kenobi before “spirit” effects were added.
