Master and Commander Sells 3.5M DVDs in One Week

Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World has sold nearly 3.5 million DVDs during its first week in release, making it the nation’s top-selling DVD this month, according to 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment. The film also topped Video Store magazine’s weekly rental chart during the week ended April 25, generating an estimated $15.9 million in gross rental revenue.

Fox’s Stuck on You had sold through nearly 1 million DVDs during its first 24 hours in release Tuesday.

The debut of Disney’s The Haunted Mansion topped Nielsen VideoScan’s First Alert VHS sales chart for the week ending April 25 and placed second to “Commander” on the First Alert DVD sales chart for the same frame. The film generated an estimated $7.23 million in gross rental revenue during its first week in release, making it the nation’s No. 5 rental title for the week ending April 25.

Miramax’s Kill Bill Vol. 1 dropped from number three on the DVD sales chart to third during its second week out. It also fell to second place in rentals, making an estimated $12.18 million in gross rental revenue for a two-week haul of about $25 million.
