A Series of Unfortunate Events Fan-Made Teaser is Awesome

In November, Netflix announced that they were bringing “A Series of Unfortunate Events” — the bestselling YA book series by author Lemony Snicket (real name Daniel Handler) — to the small screen, and although no more information has leaked since then, we now have a fan-made teaser that’s so well-produced, many were fooled into thinking it was the real deal. Check it out below!

With 13 children’s novels in the cycle, Netflix has no shortage of material to pilfer for their show, and in the tease uploaded by the mysterious “Eleanor Poe,” you can indeed see Easter eggs from throughout the run of the books in the teaser, which is set to The Dresden Dolls’ “Missed Me”. Besides Klaus Baudelaire’s glasses and Violet Baudelaire’s hair ribbon, they have included the infamous Lachrymose leeches from book three (“The Wide Window”) and the crows from book seven (“The Vile Village”), not to mention Count Olaf’s forebodingly distinct shadow.

Handler will serve as executive producer for the (real) series, which has neither a confirmed director, showrunner or cast at this point. “A Series of Unfortunate Events” will recreate the darkly humorous visual world of Violet, Klaus, and little Sunny Baudelaire, three orphans who are doggedly pursued by their distant cousin/uncle Count Olaf. The books have collectively sold more than 60 million copies and have been translated into 41 languages.

The 2004 film was directed by Brad Silberling, who approached the material from a German expressionist/silent film/Edward Gorey-inspired visual palette, and also introduced the world to actress Emily Browning (Sucker Punch, Pompeii) as Violet. Despite grossing $209 million worldwide, the film was deemed too expensive to be profitable and plans for a Harry Potter-esque franchise were abandoned.
