Boy Swallows Universe Trailer Previews Netflix’s Coming-of-Age Series

The trailer for Boy Swallows Universe previews Netflix’s 1980s series, which is based on Trent Dalton’s seminal Australian novel of the same name.

“An epic coming-of-age story set in 1980s Brisbane that blends the magic and innocence of youth with the brutal reality of the adult world,” reads the official synopsis. “A lost father, a mute brother, a recovering addict mum, a heroin dealer for a stepfather, and a notorious criminal for a babysitter. Eli Bell is just trying to follow his heart and understand what it means to become a good man, but fate keeps throwing obstacles in his way.”

When does Boy Swallows Universe debut on Netflix?

The adaptation, which examines the crossroads where a boy becomes a man and good toys with evil, debuts on January 11, 2024.

Boy Swallows Universe stars Felix Cameron as Eli Bell, Phoebe Tonkin as Eli’s mother Frances, Simon Baker as Eli’s father Robert, Travis Fimmel as the protagonist’s drug dealer stepfather Lyle Orlik, Bryan Brown as Slim, Lee Tiger Halley as Gus, Anthony LaPaglia as Tytus Broz, Deborah Mailman as Poppy Birkbeck, and Sophie Wilde as Caitlyn Spies.

The scripts were written by acclaimed screenwriter John Collee. Directors are Bharat Nalluri, Jocelyn Moorhouse, and Kim Mordaunt.

Executive producers are Troy Lum (The Water Diviner, Saving Mr Banks, Mao’s Last Dancer), Andrew Mason (The Matrix, The Water Diviner), Sophie Gardiner (Howard’s End, Chimerica), Kerry Roberts (Foe, Boy Erased) and Joel Edgerton (The Great Gatsby, Bright, The King).
