Power Book III: Raising Kanan Teaser Sets July Premiere

Starz has released the first Power Book III: Raising Kanan teaser for their newest and third spinoff series to Courtney A. Kemp’s growing Power TV franchise. In addition, Grammy-nominated musician Redman has been tapped for a guest-starring role in the second season of Power Book II: Ghost, reuniting him onscreen with Method Man, who is portraying the role of Davis MacLean. Redman is set to portray the role of Theo Rollins, Davis MacLean’s older brother, bringing the rap legends together once again on the big screen.

Set in South Jamaica, Queens, in 1991, Raising Kanan is a prequel to the original Power franchise. It is a sprawling family drama that revolves around the coming of age of Kanan Stark. Stark is Ghost and Tommy’s mentor, partner and adversary, who ultimately dies in a hail of gunfire in the eighth episode of Power’s penultimate season. The series centers around fifteen-year-old Kanan, the only child of Raquel “Raq” Thomas, a cocaine distributor with an emerging network of dealers across the city.

Much like the original series, Raising Kanan explores themes of identity, violence, and legacy, but it is also a deep dive into the very pathology of family; the unique, complicated and fraught dynamic between parent and child, mother and father, brother and sister.

Tony winner Patina Miller will lead the series as Raquel Thomas, Kanan’s queen pin mother and Mekai Curtis as Kanan Stark. It will also feature Omar Epps as Detective Malcolm Howard, London Brown as Marvin Thomas, Malcolm Mays as Louis “Lou-Lou” Thomas, Hailey Kilgore as Jukebox, Joey Bada$$ as Unique, Toby Sandeman as Symphony Bosket, Shanley Caswell as Detective Shannon Burke, Lovie Simone as Davina Harrison and Quincy Brown as Crown Camacho.
