On the heels of last week’s surprise news that The Disney Channel is moving forward with a follow-up series to the hit “Boy Meets World,” Zap2It delivers some new plot and character details for the show, to be titled “Girl Meets World.”
Created by Michael Jacobs and April Kelly, “Boy Meets World” aired from 1993 to 2000 and starred Ben Savage as Cory Matthews. Beginning with his life as a sixth grader, the series followed Cory through high school, to college and eventually into marriage with longtime love interest, Topanga Lawrence (Danielle Fishel).
Although Savage and Fishel have not, as of yet, been confirmed to return, the new show is said to find Cory as a seventh grade history teacher, echoing qualities of William Daniels’ Mr. Feeny on the original show. Married to Topanga, the pair have a 14-year-old Son, Elliot and a 13-year-old daughter, Riley Matthews. The latter part is the series’ central protagonist and is now being cast with the following character description:
“Indelible personality. An adorable girl on the cusp of whatever comes next in life, and wanting to rush into it head first. She is fiercely loyal to her friends, and spends most of her time juggling the obstacles that life throws her way… There is no obstacle in this girl’s world that can dampen her bright spirit and eternal optimism.”
Also currently being cast is the role of Riley’s best friend, Maya, described as having a contrary outlook on life. A decided pessimist, Maya and Riley are both in Cory’s class and, despite their differences, are the very best of friends.
“Girl Meets World” is scheduled to begin shooting in February 2013, so check back for details as they become available.
