Meryl Streep Joins Big Little Lies Season 2

Back in December, HBO renewed their hit series Big Little Lies for a second season, with Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman set to return as both stars and executive producers. Now, The Hollywood Reporter brings word that three-time Academy Award winner and 21-time nominee Meryl Streep (The Iron LadyMamma Mia!) will join the cast of Big Little Lies Season 2! Streep will play Mary Louise Wright, the mother of Alexander Skarsgård’s Perry Wright, who arrives in Monterey concerned for the well-being of her grandchildren following the events of the first season.

Streep was recently Oscar nominated for her performance in Steven Spielberg’s The Post. She will next be seen in this summer’s musical sequel Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, and will also appear opposite Emily Blunt in Disney’s Christmas release Mary Poppins Returns. Although this will mark a rare sojourn into television for the acclaimed actress, she previously won an Emmy for HBO’s 2003 miniseries Angels in America.

Director Jean-Marc Vallée (Dallas Buyers Club), who shot all the episodes in Season 1, will not direct this coming season. Andrea Arnold (TransparentAmerican Honey) will take the helm for Season 2, as well as serving as an executive producer.

Most of the cast is expected to return for Season 2. David E. Kelley will write the season based on a story by Liane Moriarty, who wrote the novel Big Little Lies. Vallée will continue on as executive producer.

Big Little Lies Season 1 took home eight primetime Emmy’s, including statues for Nicole Kidman, Alexander Skarsgård, Laura Dern, Jean-Marc Vallée and Outstanding Limited Series.
