Powers Boothe Doubles Down in the Marvel Cinematic Universe

Powers Boothe has joined the cast of Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD in a recurring role

Powers Boothe has just landed his second Marvel Cinematic Universe role. Marvel today revealed that the Sin City star (who previously played a member of the World Security Council in Marvel’s The Avengers) will play a recurring role on the currently-airing third season of Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD.

Powers Boothe will play a character named Gideon Malick, officially described as, “a notorious man whose loyalties remain a mystery”.

“Gideon is incredibly menacing,” explains Executive Producer/Head of Marvel Television, Jeph Loeb, “and in him we have a character that even the stone-cold Grant Ward would fear. Only someone of Powers’ caliber could deliver the type of ominous and powerful performance we needed.”

Although the name Gideon Malick doesn’t appear in the comic books, there is an X-Force character who goes by the name of Gideon. It is a near certainty, however, that the rights to that Gideon are held by 20th Century Fox. A more likely comic book connection ties to the characters’ last name. Albert Malik (spelled slightly differently) was the name of the second man to take on the mantle of the Red Skull.

The Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. cast includes Clark Gregg as Director Phil Coulson, Ming-Na Wen as Agent Melinda May, Brett Dalton as Grant Ward, Chloe Bennet as Agent Daisy Johnson, Iain De Caestecker as Agent Leo Fitz, Elizabeth Henstridge as Agent Jemma Simmons, Nick Blood as Agent Lance Hunter, Adrianne Palicki as Agent Bobbi Morse, Henry Simmons as Agent Alphonso “Mack” MacKenzie and Luke Mitchell as Lincoln Campbell.
