Take a First Look at Robert De Niro as Bernie Madoff

Robert De Niro is Bernie Madoff in the first The Wizard of Lies still.

Barry Levinson’s The Wizard of Lies stars Robert De Niro as Bernie Madoff

HBO Films has just released the very first look at Robert De Niro as Bernie Madoff alongside Michelle Pfeiffer as Ruth Madoff from the upcoming telefilm, The Wizard of Lies. Check it out in full in the gallery viewer below.

Directed by Barry Levinson (The Humbling, Man of the Year), The Wizard of Lies offers a look behind the scenes at Bernie Madoff’s massive Ponzi scheme, including how it was perpetrated on the public and the trail of destruction it left in its wake, both for the victims and Madoff’s family. John Burnham Schwartz, Sam Baum and Sam Levinson provide the screenplay, adapting the book of the same name by Diana Henriques. Laurie Sandell‘s book Truth and Consequences, also provides additional source material.

A two-time Academy Award winner, Robert De Niro will be on the big screen later this month, starring in Nancy Meyers’ The Intern opposite Anne Hathaway. Pfeiffer, meanwhile, is a three-time Academy Award nominee and recently starred opposite De Niro in Luc Besson’s mafia comedy thriller The Family.

Levinson’s latest big screen release, Rock the Kasbah, is heading to theaters October 23 with a cast that includes Bill Murray, Kate Hudson, Zooey Deschanel, Danny McBride, Scott Caan, Leem Lubany, Arian Moayed and Bruce Willis. Murray made a memorable first appearance at Comic-Con International to promote the film back in July and you can check out all the highlights of that panel with our list of the 10 Best Things Bill Murray Said at Comic-Con.

Levinson also serves as executive producer on The Wizard of Lies along with Robert De Niro, Jane Rosenthal, and Berry Welsh. Jason Sosnoff serves as co-executive producer.
