Carl Franklin is set to direct HBO’s David Milch pilot “Last of the Ninth”; Allen Coulter has signed on for Showtime’s untitled Edie Falco comedy.

“Last of the Ninth,” a cop drama set in Gotham circa 1972, revolves around a younger detective just back from the Vietnam War and his mentor relationship with an older detective; the younger detective goes undercover. Milch is executive producing with his longtime collaborator and former police gumshoe Bill Clark.

Coulter’s reuniting with former “Sopranos” star Falco for the Showtime half-hour about an independent-minded nurse who fights bureaucracy and inefficiency in the contempo health-care system. Lionsgate TV-produced pilot will be executive produced by scribes Linda Wallem and Liz Brixius, who co-wrote the script with Evan Dunsky, and Caryn Mandabach.
