Paul Wesley opens up about You Deserve to Know
Wesley discussed his highly anticipated reunion with Dobrev during an interview with Entertainment Weekly at the San Diego Comic-Con. “Nina and I have been very close, and we’ve stayed friendly. … We’re close friends,” Wesley said, revealing that they wanted to do another project together after The Vampire Diaries.
They considered various pieces of I.P., books, and original concepts and spoke to different producers and studios. Wesley added, “There were a few things that we were offered that just didn’t make sense. This came about through our friend Aaron Kaplan and Alex Cooper.”
Reports about the Hulu series began circulating in June this year. Additionally, the log line for the show says that it follows “three suburban couples who are neighbors and best friends.” After the murder of one of the husbands, “a shocking trail of secrets is revealed.” Dobrev and Wesley star as Gwen and Scott, respectively. They are neighbors who find themselves on opposite sides of a murder investigation.
“It’s this beautiful ensemble,” Wesley also said. “It’s this perfect mix of exploring relationships between neighbors and husbands and wives and friends. Then, also, a juicy murder mystery.” He then noted that You Deserve to Know is a “mature version” of The Vampire Diaries, stating that it’s for the fans who have grown up since the older series. He continued, “They’re in their 20s and 30s, and they want something a little more edgy and a little more sophisticated.”
Further, Wesley said that You Deserve to Know has many “twists and turns.” He went on to underscore more similarities between the two shows. “What made The Vampire Diaries such a big hit is that every episode ended with sort of a hook that made you want to watch the next episode, and this was pre-streaming,” the Star Trek: Strange New Worlds actor elaborated. “This time, we’re going to do the same thing in a very different way — minus the vampires —where every episode leaves you guessing.”
You Deserve to Know currently doesn’t have a release date.
