Marvel has just altered the popular intro sequence of X-Men ’97 to make room for another team of mutants. The new team’s appearance is part of larger changes to the sequence that reflect the ongoing narrative in the series. X-Men ’97 returned with Season 2 on July 1, 2026, with the first three episodes becoming available together on Disney+.
X-Men ’97 replaces its opening credits with an X-Force sequence
As the sophomore season of X-Men ’97 starts, the mutant heroes are dispersed across time, split into two teams. One group is in 3,000 BC, and the other is in 3960 AD. Accordingly, each of the first three episodes gets its own opening sequence, based on the characters that particular episode focuses on. Interestingly, Season 2 Episode 2 reveals significant changes to the opening sequence, introducing the X-Force, an iconic X-Men spin-off group that originated in the ’90s.
The X-Force made their comic-book debut back in 1991 in The New Mutants #100. Writer/illustrator Rob Liefeld created the team. The New Mutants decided to change their name and call themselves the X-Force. The founding members were Boom-Boom / Meltdown, Cable, Cannonball, Shatterstar, Feral, and Warpath.
Cable and Boom-Boom are also members of the current roster of the X-Force in the comics, with the former serving as team leader. The team in the comics also includes Archangel, Hellverine, and Ms. Marvel.
X-Men ’97 draws on the X-Force’s history in the comics to form its iteration of the group. Cable tellingly refers to them as a “black ops unit,” a phrase that has an association with a roster with Archangel and Psylocke. It hints toward a potential narrative decision that can depict Cyclops as the leader of the team, just like it is with that roster in the source material. Aside from Cable, Archangel, and Psylocke, the members of the X-Men ’97 version of the X-Force are Jubilee and Sunspot.
New episodes of X-Men ’97 Season 2 will stream weekly on Disney+.
