Avatar: The Last Airbender Star Already Knows Which Spin-off Should Happen

One of the stars of Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender has an idea for a spin-off set in the same universe. The live-action adaptation will wrap up after a three-season run. However, the actor believes the show can go on with a spin-off based on a storyline from the comic books.

Ahead of Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender Season 2’s release later this week, Ian Ousley, who portrays Sokka in the show, said that a spin-off centered on the Fire Lord Zuko could be a great idea. More specifically, the story is about Zuko searching for his long-lost mother.

“I want to see Zuko as the Fire Lord for real. And I want to see him find his mom!’ Ousley told Screen Rant. The actor went on to explain that he’d like to be in the spin-off as Sokka. But even if he is not a part of it, he’d like to see “some version” of the story, adding that it could even be a political drama.

The storyline the actor refers to is from Avatar: The Last Airbender – The Search. It is a three-part comic book series, all of which were released in 2013. It centers on the mystery surrounding Zuko and Azula’s missing mother, Ursa. Desperate to find her, the two team up with Aang, Sokka, and Katara and head to Ursa’s hometown, Hira’a. The books alternate between the past and the present, slowly uncovering the truth about Ursa’s disappearance.

The 24-year-old then recalled reading the comic books as a kid and not fully understanding them at first. Although he didn’t like certain changes, he grew to love them. He also noted that Suki later became one of Zuko’s royal guards and said it would be exciting to see the group working together again. He expressed interest in exploring how they would help rebuild the Fire Nation into a normal nation rather than the antagonist it had once been.

Whether Netflix plans to adapt the sequel comic books remains to be seen. Meanwhile, the showrunners have reportedly completed filming Season 3 and are awaiting a release date. The streamer will likely announce it after Season 2, which drops on Thursday, June 25, 2026.
