Why Halo Season 3 May Not Be Dead Despite Paramount+ Cancellation

Xbox’s Matt Booty just dropped a major hint about Halo’s future in Hollywood. The Xbox executive addressed the franchise’s adaptation prospects following the Paramount+ series cancellation.

Xbox just gave Halo fans a reason to hope again

Xbox executive vice president Matt Booty hinted at a future for the Halo franchise beyond gaming, Entertainment Weekly reported. The comments come as Xbox celebrates 25 years and pursues ambitious Hollywood adaptation plans.

The previous Halo live-action series at Paramount+ ended after its second season. However, Netflix later picked up the show’s streaming distribution rights. The series then climbed to the top of the streaming charts on the platform. Booty addressed the franchise’s future during a recent interview. “Halo, first and foremost, is one of our biggest franchises,” Booty said. “It’s iconic to Xbox and we’re certainly going to invest going forward.”

Meanwhile, his comments arrived alongside the reveal of Halo: Campaign Evolved at the 2026 Xbox Showcase. The upcoming title remakes the original game that launched the franchise 25 years ago. It carries a release date of July 28.

Beyond gaming, Xbox currently has more than a dozen movie and TV adaptations in various development stages. The company already counts two major adaptation successes under its belt. A Minecraft Movie became the fifth highest-grossing film of 2025 worldwide. Additionally, Fallout ranks as the second most-watched TV series on Amazon after its second season.

Newly appointed Xbox CEO Asha Sharma also outlined a broader entertainment vision for the brand. She highlighted the company’s existing adaptation track record during her interview. “We’ve got the number two show of all time on Amazon, Minecraft was top 5 in 2025, Call of Duty is bigger than the Marvel Cinematic Universe,” Sharma said.

Xbox also recently confirmed other adaptations in its pipeline. These include a live-action Gears of War movie at Netflix and a Sea of Thieves film.
