New Supernatural Spin-off Brings Sam & Dean Back To Tear Them Apart

Supernatural‘s Sam and Dean Winchester are returning, but this time their bond may face its biggest test yet. A newly announced spin-off sets the brothers on separate paths for the first time in years. The project is also fueling speculation about what the future of the franchise could look like.

Supernatural: Wayward Special spin-off comic announced

Dynamite Entertainment has revealed Supernatural: Wayward Special #1, a 48-page one-shot arriving on September 2, 2026. The comic is written by Paulina Ganucheau and illustrated by John Amor. According to the official synopsis, the story will kick off a major new chapter for the franchise and lead directly into a larger event planned for later this year (via ScreenRant).

What makes the announcement notable is its central premise. The comic teases that Sam and Dean, who have always remained connected through family and their shared mission, will be driven apart by a mysterious force. The solicitation asks: “What horrible, hellish forces could drive these brothers to travel separate roads?” That question appears to be at the heart of the new story.

The announcement has already sparked discussion among longtime fans. Many see the project as a possible bridge toward a long-rumored Season 16. Because Dynamite’s current Supernatural comics have largely stayed within established continuity, there is speculation that Wayward Special could also be considered canon. Some fans believe it may even explore the period after the Season 15 finale, when Dean was in Heaven while Sam continued his life on Earth.

The new comic will also feature photo variant covers showcasing Ackles and Padalecki, along with a limited-edition mystery blind bag version. For fans eager to revisit the Winchester brothers, Supernatural: Wayward Special #1 looks set to be one of the franchise’s biggest releases in years.

Originally airing from 2005 to 2020, Supernatural became one of television’s longest-running genre series. Starring Jensen Ackles as Dean and Jared Padalecki as Sam, the show built a passionate fan base thanks to its horror, mythology, family drama, and monster-hunting elements.
