Sarah Sherman revealed during an appearance on the new short-form series The Rundown that she had lied to SNL‘s Lorne Michaels. She did so to get a sketch approved that she was eager to perform.

During the interview, Sherman explained that she was essentially unable to see during the performance. She did not disclose that fact to the SNL boss. The incident occurred during the Season 48 sketch “Eyes.”

“The googly eyes, I couldn’t really see out of,” Sherman admitted on The Rundown, “I told everyone I could but they weren’t gonna let me do the sketch if I couldn’t see.” She further explained, “There was a hole in the white part of the googly eye and a hole in the black part of the googly eye, so I could only see it when they lined up perfectly. But the whole joke of the sketch is that they’re moving around crazy.”

Sherman added, “So don’t tell Lorne I memorized so that I could pull the sketch off.”

In the sketch, Sherman played Janine, a woman who is offended that no one noticed she had her eyes replaced. The performance received praise from viewers following its airing.

Sherman also revealed that she often thinks about the props and appearance of her character while writing for SNL. “Many times I’ve been in [the final] slot, I have the wig on, I have the costume on, I’m waiting to see if it’s still in the show,” she said, “All of a sudden I just feel my hairdresser’s hands come onto my head to peel the wig right off. That’s how I know it’s been cut.”
