Major Character Returns to The Rookie 2 Years After Exit in New Trailer

The Rookie’s latest trailer teases the surprising return of a major character two years after their departure. As The Rookie Season 8 approaches Episode 5, the preview offers a first look at how this familiar face re-enters the story and why their comeback matters to the unfolding case.

The Rookie Season 8 Episode 5 trailer brings back a familiar face

In The Rookie Season 8, Episode 5 trailer, Aaron Thorsen (Tru Valentino) returns to the series after his absence since Season 6. The episode, titled “The Network,” features Lieutenant Grey (Richard T. Jones) and an FBI task force requesting Thorsen’s help in dismantling a criminal organization.

Thorsen originally joined the show in Season 4 and became a regular in Season 5. He exited in Season 6 following a shooting and his fallout with LAPD psychiatrist Dr. Blair London (Danielle Campbell), which led to his transfer to North Hollywood.

The preview shows an FBI agent briefing Thorsen on a heroin trafficking case. The trafficker turns out to be Thorsen’s former prison roommate. They met while Thorsen was wrongfully incarcerated in France for his friend’s murder — a crime he did not commit.

Thorsen later cleared his name and joined the LAPD, but the incident left lasting effects and shaped how others viewed him within the department. The trailer shows that he may now use his past experience to help dismantle the criminal network.

The show did not publicly state a specific reason for Tru Valentino’s departure, but confirmed that he left on good terms. After his exit, Valentino posted on Instagram Stories, “You never know who may pop back up in the Mid-Wilshire precinct. Until then, 7 Adam 19, this is Officer Thorsen, over and out!”

The Rookie airs Mondays at 10:00 PM ET / 7:00 PM PT on ABC. New episodes stream the following day on Hulu. In Episode 5, Nolan (Nathan Fillion), Miles (Deric Augustine), Lucy (Melissa O’Neil), and Celina (Lisseth Chavez) investigate an officer-involved shooting. Meanwhile, the main plot focuses on Thorsen’s collaboration with the FBI.
