A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms EP on 1 Scene That Shocked George R. R. Martin

Episode 1 of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms quickly made it clear that this Game of Thrones prequel will play with expectations. It opens with a moment so abrupt and graphic that it left viewers shocked.

Ira Parker addresses the defecation scene in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Episode 1

Within minutes of Episode 1, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms undercut a traditionally heroic setup with an abrupt and graphic gag. In it, Ser Duncan, also known as Dunk, is seen mourning the death of his mentor Ser Arlan of Pennytree. Broke, inexperienced, and unsure of his place in the world, Dunk resolves to enter a jousting tournament. As he makes this decision, the Emmy-winning Game of Thrones theme music begins to play.

Instead, the music cuts sharply to Dunk projectile defecating, puncturing the grandeur of the moment. It notably surprised co-creator George R. R. Martin. Showrunner Ira Parker offered a detailed explanation for why the moment exists and what it is meant to convey. “So in the script it reads, ‘Duncan hears the hero theme in his head,’” Parker explained to The Hollywood Reporter. “He was going to hear that call to greatness that we all hear when we decide we’re going to do something really difficult that we’ve never done before.”

Parker said the interruption reflects reality crashing into fantasy. “But then the reality of doing this, how difficult it is, how scary it is. That turns his guts to water. Because he’s not a hero yet,” he said. “All we’re trying to say here is that Dunk is not a hero yet. He’s just a nervy kid with a nervous stomach.” Summing it up, “And as badly as you want to do something great, as soon as you actually have to go off and do it, it becomes trickier. And that’s what the whole season is for him.”

Parker also teased that Episode 1 won’t be the last time audiences hear the famed theme song in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, hinting that its gonna be a “slow burn.”
