Hulu has canceled a TV show that was positively received after just one season.
Co-created by Max Mutchnick and David Kohan, Mid-Century Modern is a television sitcom that premiered on Hulu this past March. It stars Nathan Lane as Bunny Schneiderman, Matt Bomer as Jerry Frank, Nathan Lee Graham as Arthur Broussard, and Linda Lavin, who passed away in December 2024, as Sybil Schneiderman.
What did Max Mutchnick say about Hulu cancelling Mid-Century Modern?
Per Deadline, Hulu has opted not to move forward with the show, meaning there will be no Mid-Century Modern Season 2.
Mutchnick wrote on Instagram, “Ten great episodes… Not enough. But we loved making every single one of them. We’re gonna miss our very special show. Thanks to everyone who watched.”
The show, per the official logline, “follows three best friends — gay gentlemen of a certain age – who, after an unexpected death, decide to spend their golden years living together in Palm Springs where the wealthiest one lives with his mother. As a chosen family, they prove that no matter how hard things get, there’s always someone around to remind you it would be better if you got your neck done.”
The show received positive reviews from critics and fans, as it currently has an 88 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes’ Tomatometer and an 80 percent score on the Popcornmeter. As noted by Variety, however, while Hulu typically doesn’t release viewership information for its shows, it appears Mid-Century Modern didn’t attract enough viewers, as it “did not make an appearance in the Nielsen Top 10 streaming charts, which measures streaming viewership.”
The cast of Mid-Century Modern further includes Pamela Adlon as Mindy Schneiderman, Richard King as Caroll Mintz, Zane Phillips as Mason, Vanessa Bayer as Liz, Jesse Tyler Ferguson as Tevin, Billie Lourd as Becca Frank, Rhea Perlman as Judy, and Judd Hirsch as Alan.
