Veteran actor Danny DeVito, who plays Frank Reynolds on It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, reflected on whether the long-running sitcom will continue beyond Season 18. Created by Rob Mac and developed by Mac and Glenn Howerton, It’s Always Sunny premiered on FX on August 4, 2005. In 2013, FX greenlit the 10th season of the show and moved it to the sister network, FXX. The latest chapter, Season 17, aired on FXX from July 9, 2025, to August 20, 2025, and was simulcast on FX.

DeVito spoke on the prospects of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia ending with Season 18 during a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter. Back in 2020, FX renewed the show for four additional seasons, which ensured that it would continue at least until Season 18. However, at the time of this article’s composition, the show’s future beyond that remains uncertain.
“Well, as long as we have a good ending — I don’t know what the ending could be, they probably have one already figured out in their head,” the 80-year-old actor said. “It would be hard to let go, but if it’s right and the audience is happy with it, then I think it’s a good thing to do.”
DeVito then spoke about Taxi, the ABC (later NBC) sitcom in which he played Louie De Palma and won a Primetime Emmy for the performance. He recalled that he and his fellow cast members gave everything they had for the fifth and final season because they knew that the show would end after that.
“When Sunny comes to an end, we’ll know it and we’ll all embrace it,” DeVito added. “We really dig each other and we’ll always work together.”
This isn’t the first time DeVito has been asked this question. During an interview with the Los Angeles Times, he and Charlie Day spoke on whether Season 19 could happen, with the latter expressing doubts on the matter.
It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia Season 18 doesn’t yet have an official release date.
