Molly Shannon to Lead HBO Comedy Series From SNL Writer, Plot Details Revealed

Molly Shannon is set to lead a comedy series that’s currently in development at HBO from former Saturday Night Live writer Steve Koren, according to Deadline.

Shannon, an SNL vet, will play a woman who is addicted to celebrity news and gossip. Her friends and family confront her about this and she agrees to go to rehab, but the catch is it’s a fancy celebrity rehab in Malibu. Instead of confronting her issues, Shannon’s character acts as if she’s staying at the Four Seasons. Once she’s there, she connects with her favorite young starlet and has to decide whether to return to her family or join the starlet in Hollywood.

The project is executive produced by Shannon and Koren, in addition to Shannon’s longtime manager, Steven Levy. As for Shannon and Koren, the project marks a reunion for the duo. They met in 1995, as they were both on SNL, and and worked together on a number of sketches. That includes Superstar, the SNL spin-off movie starring Shannon’s famous Mary Katherine Gallagher, which Koren wrote.

Shannon’s other recent projects

A three-time Emmy nominee, Shannon has recently made a number of appearances in several different shows. That includes the short-lived Showtime comedy I Love That For You, which garnered her an Indie Spirit Award nomination. She also recurred on Max’s The Other Two and had a memorable guest role on The White Lotus Season 1. Next, she’ll be seen in Only Murders in the Building Season 4.
