X-Files Creator Gives Update On Ryan Coogler Reboot & Addresses Potential Revival

The X-Files creator Chris Carter has offered an update on Ryan Coogler’s reboot of the iconic sci-fi series, in addition to addressing a potential revival involving stars David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson.

What’s the latest on The X-Files?

The Wrap spoke with Carter recently during the opening of his Carter’s exhibit in Los Angeles, with the creator clarifying his involvement in Coogler’s reboot of The X-Files: “I wouldn’t. Only as a cheerleader. They don’t need my blessing. 20th Century Fox and Disney owns the show. They are free to do with it what they believe. I’m honored that they came to me and asked me, not for my permission, but my blessing.”

Carter also confirmed that he’s spoken to Coogler about the project, noting: “I’m not supposed to be talking about it, according to Disney. But I’ll tell you, yes. I’ve had a conversation with him. Yes, he likes to go with a diverse cast. And he’s got some good ideas.”

Carter was also asked whether he plans to watch the new X-Files, confessing that he’s curious to see how it turns out: “Sure. Yeah. I’m curious. It’s not the easiest show to write because of the subject matter. It’s not like Law & Order, where you have the crime of the week. You have to imagine ‘what if’ and that ‘what if’ is oftentimes hard to tackle.”

In terms of whether the original X-Files could return, with Anderson and Duchovny reprising their respective roles as Dana Scully and Fox Murder, the series creator cautioned that his interest in another revival would depend on the involvement of the two leads: “If David and Gillian wanted to do it again. Yeah, probably, then I would be inspired.”

Coogler’s reboot of The X-Files was first revealed by Carter in March 2023. It’s unclear if the project from the Black Panther and Creed director is connected to the original. Although it is still in development, no casting or plot details have been shared.

It’s worth noting that the animated comedy spin-off, The X-Files: Albuquerque, first announced in August 2020, is no longer in development and won’t be moving forward.
