They Called Him Mostly Harmless Trailer Explores the Mystery Behind Appalachian Trail Hiker’s Death

Max has released the trailer for They Called Him Mostly Harmless, set to explore the mystery behind a hiker’s dead body, which took two years to be identified. The upcoming documentary series is set to hit the streamer on February 8.

They Called Him Mostly Harmless had its world premiere last year at the Hamptons International Film Festival. The docuseries will center on the mysterious Appalachian Trail hiker, who was found dead in Florida’s Cypress National Preserve on July 23, 2018.

Without any forms of identification, the “emaciated” man remains unidentified for two years. There weren’t even family members or friends who came forward to claim the man’s body. The autopsy, moreover, could not determine the specific cause of the hiker’s death. According to reports, there were also no signs of foul play.

Similar to Luka Magnotta’s case, which Netflix explored back in 2019 through Don’t F**k with Cats: Hunting an Internet Killer, the upcoming documentary will also feature people from the internet who were trying to investigate the hiker’s identity. The hiker was ultimately identified as Vance John “Vaejor” Rodriguez, over two years after his body was first found.

“It’s hard to disappear, even harder to be found”

The mysterious hiker is known by his trail names Mostly Harmless, Denim, and Ben Bilemy. The docuseries’ director, Patricia E. Gillespie, shared (via Entertainment Tonight) why Mostly Harmless’ story piqued her interest.

“I was drawn to this story because of its potential to help us think more deeply about what it means to live in the digital age. I hope we’ve made a film that manages to both honor the citizen detectives who worked tirelessly to identify Mostly Harmless, while encouraging audiences to get involved in the issue of unidentified persons,” said Gillespie.

They Called Him Mostly Harmless premieres on February 8.
