The Office Spin-off Gets a Development Update

More than three months since the development of The Office spin-off was revealed, we finally have a brand new update regarding its current status.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, The Office creator Greg Daniels is currently preparing to open the writers room for the upcoming revival of NBC’s iconic workplace sitcom. Produced by Universal Television, the project is being described as a “new take” on the popular comedy series, which is still one of the most binged-watched shows to date.

The Office Spin-Off Won’t Be a Reboot of the Original Series

In a previous interview, Daniels teased the potential storyline of the upcoming The Office spin-off, confirming that it won’t be a reboot of the original since he’s not interested in recreating the same show with a different cast. In addition, Daniels also expressed his interest in doing a new story that will take place within the same universe as the original.

“The notion of maybe something like the way The Mandalorian is a new show in the Star Wars universe, you know what I mean?” He said. “Something like the notion of this documentary crew doing a documentary about a different subject,” he continued. “That, I think, could be intriguing and creative. But I don’t even know what you would call that. I don’t know if that’s like a sister show or something. I don’t know what the term is. But it doesn’t feel like ‘reboot’ would be the appropriate term for that.”

NBC’s The Office was based on Ricky Gervais’ and Stephen Merchant’s original UK series of the same name. The Emmy-winning mockumentary sitcom lasted for nine seasons from 2005-2013. It starred Steve Carell, John Krasinski, Rainn Wilson, Jenna Fischer as Pam Beesly, Ed Helms, B.J. Novak, Mindy Kaling, Angela Kinsey, Oscar Nuñez, Brian Baumgartner, Leslie David Baker, Phyllis Smith, Ellie Kemper, Amy Ryan and more.
